Is store bought organic seaweed safer than harvesting myself?

I live 15 minutes from several beaches along the coast of California and I see so much seaweed floating on shore. I would LOVE to harvest it but am concerned it may be toxic with petroleum, parasites, bacteria or mercury. Any thoughts on this?

Wild or Organic?
by: AlgAran

Indeed Wild seaweed can be polluted!
Even seaweed that we purchase in an organic shop could be polluted, unless they are certified Organic.
Organic Seaweed are the only safe ones.
Make sure that there is a Logo and Certification Licence Number on the packet!

Organic Seaweed???
by: Terry d'Selkie

Since seaweed grows wild in the ocean, the actual seaweed cannot be called "organic". The processing of the seaweed (drying) is what some seaweed companies use when they are saying that their seaweed is organic. The standards they use to say the seaweed is organic are the standards used for wild rice (why, I don't know).
