Possible and obvious ocean pollutants?

by Jan Lehde

I just love your site and have been picking red seaweed off rock, in May, for several years. This was in the near pristine waters of Alert Bay.

I moved to the Nanaimo area last summer and am concerned about harvesting seaweeds with the all the cars, ferries, pleasure boat traffic and the Harmac pulp mill.

How can I find out where, in this part of the Island, I could harvest or will I need to drive for harvesting safely?

with thanks,
Jan

Alert Bay seaweed

My friend and I will be paddling the Broughton's this summer and will be augmenting our supplies with anything we can harvest. I'm just beginning to learn what all those items will be. I didn't see a response to your question and perhaps it's a bit forward of me to ask, but if you know of any books or sources that cover what can be found on the BC ocean floor that's edible, I'd appreciate any help you could give.

Thanks and best wishes.
